Looking at Castelli's new line for this Fall/Winter - all of us here in the Bicyclinghub office developed our own shopping lists and checked our respective closets for what may be tired and in need of replacement. Did I just want an excuse to buy some new stuff ? Whatever - it does no harm and is like a new toy in that it can keep your interest fired up, and you out there on the bike. In addition to my Leggerezza SG0.6 jacket, I signed up for a pair of these Sorpasso bibtights. On paper and seeing them in the flesh - what's not to like? Plenty of warmth, the pro styling, the grippers and bibstraps, and last but by no means least Castelli's top of the line Progetto X2 seatpad. In reality, and after having now ridden in them - I love 'em!
They are probably the best bibtights I have used. The Progetto X2 seatpad I have already used and found to be extremely comfortable. The Thermoflex fabric was plenty warm and, coupled with the extra protection of Thermoflex Core Due in key areas such as the knees, should take care of you in most conditions that you are going to be willing to ride in, shall we say. I even thought that I might be a little overdressed at first as it did get warmer during my maiden voyage in these. However, the fabric did it's job of wicking so well, that I remained comfortable throughout. That can be a tricky part of preparing to ride at this time of year in that it can sometimes feel like Winter proper, and at others be downright pleasant - or both during the course of the same ride ! These were super comfortable and as I write here now, I almost can't wait to get back out there in them again ! When riding in these there was no bundled up, restricted, bulky feeling of some Winter Wear. They are like a stripped down racing version of a bibtight but without sacrificing any warmth or comfort. The bibstraps are very low impact and similar to what you see on Castelli's top of the line bibshorts - so comfortable that you hardly know they are there. A mesh back helps keep you dry in this area too. I will say that they come up shorter than some I have ridden in but, with a longer length Winter sock and me mostly wearing a shoecover of some sort at this time of year, I do not find this to be a problem at all. I like the Castelli detailing and all the little touches on these. The reflective tape on the leg zippers, the leg grippers, the signature Castelli scorpion logos on the backs of the legs. These are great to ride in and look pretty trick too ! And the price - I should mention the price ! I feel like I got a super high-end pair of bibtights here without breaking the bank.
I am one pretty happy camper - Grazie mille Castelli !

NOTE: You will see BicyclingHub.com's sizing chart for bib shorts give height as the measure of reference, which we find to a more accurate gauge than Castelli's general sizing charts (also provided for your reference). Of course, some people will have a shorter torso and some longer, but we still find height to be the best measure - it is paramount to get the bib strap length right in order to get the optimum fit.

Manufacturer's Sizing Chart - shown in centimeters Some bib short buying tips from us here at BicyclingHub.com:
If you're already a convert then you'll probably know exactly what we're talking about! Many who start using bibs say that they will never look back - sounds like what we all used to say about pedals when clipless were first introduced. Bib shorts are found by most, if not all, to be the most comfortable option for a riding short - but of course this relies heavily on getting the fit right. Lack of a waistband and the fact that the bib straps serve to hold the shorts up and in proper position contribute to the comfort factor. You will notice that our sizing charts for bib shorts give height as the measure that you should use. Of course, some people will have a shorter torso and some longer, but we still find height to be the best measure - it is paramount to get the bib strap length right in order to get the optimum fit. Too long and the strap will be loose and not hold the shorts up and in position effectively. Too short and this could prove uncomfortable, pulling the short up too tightly and the straps potentially cutting in on the shoulders.
Something also to consider is that it is okay for the bib straps to feel just a little tight in the standing position, and in actual fact this is probably best, as when you are in true riding position this should slacken a little. You may find that after a few uses, the shorts will loosen up a bit as well. We suggest when you first try on the bib shorts, you try and re-create this riding position if you can - perhaps pretend you are on the bike and adopt the crouch position - or get on the bike on the indoor trainer or just pop down the driveway on your bike. (Don't be tempted to keep going though unless you are sure of the fit, as we cannot accept exchanges that have been ridden in!)
As with most clothing items, there can be a considerable variance in the sizing across different brands and this is apparent in cycling apparel as well. The most common variance is that between continental European sizing and true to American sized product - for example a pair of large Pearl Izumi shorts will come up a whole size bigger than a pair of Castelli's in large. We have a wide knowledge, and experience, of how different brands fit and can advise on these variances. Of course if you have any questions regarding sizing, we here at BicyclingHub.com will be more than happy to help you find what will work best for you.
